This Colorado Avalanche team might be for real. After losing the first game of their six-game homestand to the NHL's worst team, the Arizona Coyotes, the Avs have reeled off four straight wins against potential playoff teams, their latest victim the Columbus Blue Jackets in a tightly-contested 2-0 game.
After losing starting goaltender Semyon Varlamov halfway through their game against the Winnipeg Jets two days ago, Colorado turned to backup Jonathan Bernier for a lift and he finished off the win against the Jets and then came out with an even more impressive showing, a 35-save shutout tonight against Columbus.
As Columbus pushed hard in the third period after they started down 1-0, Bernier rose to the occasion as the defense wilted in front of him. The first ten minutes of the third saw the Blue Jackets outshoot Colorado 16-1 but they couldn't beat Bernier. Much to the surprise of the media afterward, Bernier admitted to getting a shutout on a night where he wasn't totally locked in.
